Flue Gas Analyzer
A flue gas analyzer is your “eyes” inside the combustion process, detecting a plethora of important combustion gases. They are a vital tool to optimize the combustion process, reduce pollutant emissions and to ensure compliance with environmental regulations. They are available as either ‘in-situ’ or extractive devices, depending on the requirements of your installation. The device itself is comprised of gas sensors, an electronic signal processor and a display. These devices are often used as part of a Continuous Emissions Monitoring System (CEMS) system. The term CEMS refers to a system that meets the accepted measurement methodologies outlined by a government environmental department such as the Environmental Protection Agency in the USA.
Essentially, the Flue Gas Analyzer works by sampling a small volume of flue gas from inside the chimney or appliance exhaust using a probe and a pump. The sample is then filtered and conditioned before reaching the sensors. The sensors are able to detect specific gases such as oxygen (O2), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and they will usually produce a reading of these levels on the screen of the analyser.

Alternatively, the instrument can also be used to monitor ambient CO levels in the room of operation. This is achieved by first switching the analyser on in fresh outdoor air to set it to zero values, and then taking it into the room to be monitored. Carbon Monoxide is the number one killer in home heating systems and this colourless, odourless and tasteless gas can easily be caused by incorrectly installed or serviced appliances.
